Arlington alley cats

I saw them as I walked past the burnt-out hull of the apartment block: two kitties parading along the crumbling and jagged wall, five stories up. A chunky black fuzzy one and a lithe timid black and white one, out on an expotition.

What's left of the building is surrounded by 10-foot metal fencing. The doors are locked, the windows of the first floor sealed against homeless people. For the longest time security guards patrolled the area day and night. So how did the cats get up there? Fire escape? Maybe they're survivors of the fire, feline lords of the flies?

At any rate, I stood in the middle of the sidewalk and watched them for a long time.
